Birmingham Metropolitan College wanted a new fresh inviting catering facility next to their Costa Coffee outlet at the front of their campus to attract more students to eat on site. The concept was grab and go streetfood, with an emphasis on being able to see the food prepared. We also had to contend with the fact that the facility was going to be across a corridor with glass walls from a new state of the art Technology suite and the college wanted us to match the feel.
We put great emphasis on making the counter look modern using Corian tops and frontage with drop in refrigerated self service deli units. We then chose Passthrough combination ovens so the students could see the items cooking and the serving staff could unload as the food became available.
The project has been a great success and uptake of meals has increased dramatically.
We were approached to design a remote servery for the new 6th form block. The facility was to serve at Breakfast time from 7.30-8.45am and lunch from 11am until 1.30pm. The food was to be prepared in the main kitchen and transported over, with a selection of hot and cold dishes. The school wanted a non institutional feel to the counter as it was positioned in the common room. We supplied a counter with colour coat frontage and modern looking drop in refrigerated and heated displays.
We were asked by the School and their food service consultants to design an additional servery to take the pressure off the main serving hatch. The School had good uptake of meals and were struggling to get the numbers through during the one hour lunch period. We designed a series of mobile units that when connected together formed a servery in the dining room serving refrigerated items including sandwiches, salad pots and dessert items. At the end of this we had two remote till points. The pupils were able to now chose between a traditional hot meal, or visit the new remote servery for cold grab and go items.
